The capital of Maine is Augusta and the largest city is Portland. Residents of Maine are referred to as "Mainers." Maine's unofficial nickname is "Pine Tree State." Maine's state song is "State of Maine Song." There are several theories about the origin of the name of the state, but there are no clear answers.

The state symbols for Maine include the Black-capped Chickadee as the state bird, the White Pine Cone and Tassel as the state flower, and Eastern White Pine as the state tree.

Maine is ranked 40th in population and received its statehood March 15, 1820.

The only bordering state to Maine is New Hampshire. Maine does have two major bodies of water that border it: Gulf of Maine and Atlantic Ocean.

Maine is known for some major industries such as shipbuilding, fishing or lobsters, footwear, machinery, electronics and tourism.

There were 213,593 K12 students in the Maine public schools in 1996. Out of those students 17,116 were first grade students. There were also 15,551 K12 public school teachers in the Maine public schools system. There were a total of 721 Maine public schools in 1996. (Source: IES National Center for Education Statistics)
