First Grade Word Study

In first grade, students undergo the transition from emergent readers to beginning readers. As a result, building phonics and vocabulary skills are a large part of the first grade curriculum. Our Word Study Playlists are designed for easy vocabulary practice and easy sight words practice for students at every learning level.

First grade students are expected to:

  • Increase word usage and knowledge
  • Discuss books, articles, and short stories
  • Analyze and clarify language

By the end of the year, first graders should determine the meaning of multiple-meaning words, demonstrate an understanding of syllables, and know and apply grade-level phonics.

Must know first grade spelling words include sight words like ABOUT, BEFORE, GOOD, LITTLE, THERE, and WOULD. Our first grade spelling playlists include Fry Words, which are lists of the most common words used in English.
