List Management FAQs

List Management is located within your Toolbox.

List Management is the place where you can save, edit, publish/unpublish, or delete your lists. Premium Members have the added ability to group their lists!

Note: You must be logged in to view your Toolbox, access List Management, and create and save your own word lists.

You do not need to be a Premium Member to save lists, but you do need to register for a free account.

Creating Lists: To create and save new word lists:

  1. Log into your account.
  2. Select List Management
  3. Select Create A New List.
  4. Enter your new list
  5. Select Save to continue on to the Word & Sentence Verification page.

This step will give you the ability to edit your list as well as allow you to create custom sentences and/or definitions.

Note: All default sentences and alternative sentences will be spoken in a real, human voice. If you add your own custom sentences, these will be spoken in a synthetic (computerized) voice. Also, please note that custom definitions will only be used in games and activities for Premium Members.

Importing Lists: You may import any list from a VocabularySpellingCity account into your own when you are logged in. Use Find a List to locate the list(s) you'd like to import, then click the Import link next to the name of each list you'd like to copy into your own account. Premium Members have the ability to import groups of lists.

Once the lists have been imported, you may customize them through List Management. The changes that you make and save will apply to your list only - the original list will not be affected.

List Grouping (the ability to group lists by level, subject, etc.) and List Visibility (the ability to select which students can view each list) are features that are available to Premium Members only.

Publishing/Unpublishing Lists: When lists are saved, they are automatically published. A published list is visible to everyone and may be imported. An unpublished list will appear on your List Management page, but will not be available on your homepage. If you are a Premium Member, you may create assignments from both published and unpublished lists.

Editing Lists: Both Premium and non-Premium Members can edit their saved lists by opening List Management and clicking on the Edit link next to the list. Members can change the list name, grade level or list description. They can Edit List Options by clicking on the black gear icon in the blue Help box. From here, they can set the order they'd like the words to appear in for their students, publish or unpublish the list, or clear the high scores for games that include a high score table. On the Word & Sentence Verification page, members can edit a word by clicking on the word itself. They can choose from VocabularySpellingCity's definitions and sentences or add their own. Words can be deleted by clicking the red box to the right of each word, and new words can be added to the list in the box at the bottom of the list. Premium Members have the added ability to set list visibility for individual students, which is great for differentiated instruction.

Deleting Lists: Individual lists can be deleted by clicking Delete under "What do you want to do?" Members can also delete multiple lists at once by checking the boxes to the left of each list name they wish to delete, then choosing Delete Lists from the action drop-down box.

Common FAQs - List Management

I entered a word list on the yellow notepad on the front page and played some games, but now my list is gone! What happened to it?

Lists entered on the notepad on the homepage may not be saved. If you wish to save your lists, you must log into your account and enter them through List Management in your Toolbox. Both Premium and non-Premium Members can save word lists. If you do not have an account, register here.

Why are some of my lists not appearing on my homepage?

Chances are, these lists have not been published. Only published lists appear on your homepage. To publish your lists, select List Management from your Toolbox and under the "Published?" column, click on the "No," changing it to "Yes." You can also publish (or unpublish) more than one list at a time. To do so, check the box next to each list you wish to publish or unpublish, then choose an action from the dropdown menu on the page.

Are there any limits on lists?

A 51-word limit has been added to all lists due to the fact that longer lists often result in excessive loading times, which can interfere with the performance of our games, tests, and activities. There is no limit on the number of lists you may save.

How do I access the lists that I have placed in groups?

To view (and select) lists that have been saved in groups, simply click on the red arrow to the left of the group name to open the group.

I have students of different levels in my class. Is there a way to prevent students from viewing each other's lists?

Non-Premium members cannot prevent students from viewing each other's lists; however, Premium Membership now includes the ability to make lists visible to select students. Premium Members can adjust List Visibilty on the Word & Sentence Verification page (available when a list has first been saved or by editing an existing list from List Management) by scrolling down to the bottom of the word list and selecting Student List Visibility Options on the right-hand side. They then have the option to select the students who will have access to that list.

Premium Members can also create customized Assignments for individual students or groups of students using either published or unpublished lists. When students log in, their assignments are available for them with the lists pre-loaded in them.

How do I change the order in which my lists appear in List Management and on my homepage?

To reorder your lists in List Management, hover over the left column next to the list you wish to move. When the blue arrows appear, click the left mouse button, drag the list to the desired position, and release the mouse button.

Can I delete more than one list at a time?

Yes. To delete multiple lists, click the box next to each list you wish to delete. To open a list group, click the red arrow next to the group name. You can also click "Select All" within a group or, to delete all lists at once, open each group, then check the box at the top of the lists labeled "Select All Visible", then select "Delete" from the "Choose an action..." dropdown menu.

Oops! I accidentally deleted a list - can it be retrieved?

No - unfortunately, once a list has been deleted, it cannot be retrieved.
