Spellingcity.com is a free spelling tool that makes teaching spelling exciting. With online spelling games, spelling reviews, and spelling quizzes, your students will learn those weekly spelling words with unprecedented enthusiasm.
Most teachers continue to use their own weekly word lists but they put them on SpellingCity to simplify practice and testing. Many teachers use the Resources Section of SpellingCity to learn about SpellingCity's existing lists such as Compound Words, Sight/Dolch Words, Literature-Based Word Lists, and Sound Alike Words.
How do teachers use SpellingCity.com? Many different ways. Some teachers use SpellingCity in front of the class with projection screens; some print worksheets to practice spelling, vocabulary, and handwriting; some have the students practice their words with the online games; and others give practice and final tests using the online tools.
SpellingCity now provides a premium membership with student record-keeping and premium games like Speedy Speller.
Getting Started:
• First, register for a free SpellingCity homepage where you can save your lists.
• Once you have a homepage, click on List Management to begin saving your lists. You can post your lists for the entire year at once, or post them one week at a time. Your lists will remain on our site until you edit or remove them.
• Tell your students to visit SpellingCity.com and have fun practicing their words
• Put a link to our site on your school and classroom website so it is easily accessible to your students.
Your students can login at home and involve their parents in the learning process. One teacher in a Title I school heard from many parents that their students started asking to go to the local library and community center so they could use the computers to practice on SpellingCity.com.
We have have provided a convenient Spelling City Parents’ Letter for you to print out and send home with your students. This letter, saved in PDF form, explains how parents can help their children use SpellingCity at home to look up your lists, practice words, and get ready for tests. It is also available in Spanish.
