Middle school math instruction includes the beginnings of probability and statistics, where students become acquainted with math applied to real problems. Probability and statistics is not purely mathematics, as it includes the sciences and is expressed in a language of its own. As math teachers present sets of data, review how they were sampled, examine their distributions, explain basic mathematical manipulations to identify trends, and draw inferences from the data, students are immersed in statistical terminology.

The math vocabulary lists are based on the Common Core Middle School Math Standards.
