A message to my students and parents
Hello Huia 1 students, parents and visitors to our blog (huia1thegardens.blogspot.com)
Here you will find many of the words we are learning to spell and use. Some are easy and some are a lot harder. Our aim is to learn about the history and origin of words and to be confident when encountering a new or unusual word for the first time either in spelling, reading or when we hear it used by someone else. We are particularly interested in words which have come other languages - such as tsunami, typhoon, yacht, cravat and guerilla. And, some words are just fun to say - such as schadenfreude, flabbergasted, nonchalant and anachronism!
Please be aware that the spelling and pronunciation of some words on this site will be different from New Zealand English because this is an American site. Check the description box at the top of every list for any messages about this. Students' attention is drawn to these differences and they are discussed in class as part of our spelling lesson
