Here you will find many of the words we are learning to spell and use. Try them out for yourself and see how many you can spell - or use in a sentence. Some are easy and some are a lot harder. Our aim is to learn about the history and origin of words and to be confident when encountering a new or unusual word for the first time either in spelling, reading or when we hear it used by someone else. And, some words are just fun to say - such as lugubrious, mellifluous, nefarious and ostentatious!

Please be aware that the spelling and pronunciation of some words on this site will be different from New Zealand English because this is an American site. Check the description box at the top of every list for any messages about this. Students' attention is drawn to these differences and they are discussed in class as part of our spelling lesson.
