Importing Lists 2008/01/19 13:58
Can you only import someone else's list who is a registered user, or is it possible to import a list from outside spellingcity.com? For example, I have an Excel file that I would like to import, and could save it in another format, but I don't know if it is possible to import a file from outside of spellingcity.com.

(Also, I was not able to find the import button either in mylists or new list) under "what do you want to do now", as noted in the FAQ section. So I couldn't even import a local file.)

I totally agree that importing lists should be something that is added.

It took a long time to make this, so I gave up about 1/2 way through.

However, if you had one input TextArea where a teacher, or students could copy and paste in a whole list, it would be great.

For example, let people input a list with each word on a new line:

alligator
ant
bear
bee
bird
camel
cat
cheetah
chicken
chimpanzee
cow
crocodile
deer
dog
dolphin
duck
eagle
elephant
fish
fly
fox
frog
giraffe
goat
goldfish
hamster
hippopotamus
horse
kangaroo
kitten
leopard
lion
lizard
lobster
monkey
octopus
ostrich
otter
owl
oyster
panda
parrot
pelican
pig
pigeon
porcupine
puppy
rabbit
rat
reindeer
rhinoceros
rooster
scorpion
seal
shark
sheep
shrimp
snail
snake
sparrow
spider
squid
squirrel
swallow
swan
tiger
toad
tortoise
turtle
vulture
walrus
weasel
whale
wolf
zebra

Or separated by commas (though I would prefer the above)

alligator, ant, bear, bee, bird, camel, cat, cheetah, chicken, chimpanzee, cow, crocodile, deer, dog, dolphin, duck, eagle, elephant, fish, fly, fox, frog, giraffe, goat, goldfish, hamster, hippopotamus, horse, kangaroo, kitten, leopard, lion, lizard, lobster, monkey, octopus, ostrich, otter, owl, oyster, panda, parrot, pelican, pig, pigeon, porcupine, puppy, rabbit, rat, reindeer, rhinoceros, rooster, scorpion, seal, shark, sheep, shrimp, snail, snake, sparrow, spider, squid, squirrel, swallow, swan, tiger, toad, tortoise, turtle, vulture, walrus, weasel, whale, wolf, zebra, ,

I totally agree. In an earlier version of SpellingCity.com, we had a batch import function. You could cut and paste a list into SpellingCity.com easily.

Unfortunately, we had to reprogram the site to fix some pernicious bugs and in the process, we had (to meet our goal of a Jan 1 roll-out) to leave out some features.

In the next few weeks or months, importing lists will be back. Stay tuned..
