During the summer, kids need a rest from the school schedule. But there's a risk of backsliding if there are no academic activities. For many kids, summer is an important opportunity to catch up on some materials that they missed or to get a jump start on next year. Here's some ideas that are more fun and flexible than traditional workbooks or summer study.
| 1. |
Use SpellingCity but not for spelling! Create word lists from summer reading (or use ours) and have the kids work on writing or vocabulary context skills with our games. Tell them for the summer, you don't care if they don't practice any spelling! (You'll sound cool and they'll probably play HangMouse and SpeedySpeller). Are you traveling this summer? Build word lists about what you see or where you visit.
| 2. |
Try online learning for the summer with Time4Learning.com. They have animated interactive curriculum which teaches PreK to 8th grade, language arts and math with lessons, exercises, and assessments. There's no contract. It's month to month, and one entire month with Time4Learning is less expensive than a single hour with most tutors!
| 3. |
Improve their writing skills with a one-on-one writing course from Time4Writing.com. The writing courses are flexibly scheduled, they can be taken across eight weeks or compressed into as little as four weeks. You can even schedule them around a vacation. With courses from 2nd to 12th grade and tutorials on both advanced and basic writing skills, you can pick exactly with your student needs.
| 4. |
Play some casual online learning games that are solidly academic. Vocabulary Learning Fun has word games with analogies, antonyms, oxymorons and more! For younger kids, LearningGamesforKids.com has games to practice keyboarding, math facts, animal trivia, and art and music games.
